CPS high school renovation requiring extensive exterior and interior repairs to defective original concrete and detailing

This high school, one of a class of CPS buildings labeled as "Defectives" because of the poor quality of the original concrete, required extensive renovation of the exterior masonry and terra cotta cladding, all new windows, roofs, gutters, roof drains and other exterior detailing. Adhesion tests for the interior paint throughout were conducted to facilitate repainting the interiors were much or all of the paint had peeled off. New science labs, upgraded toilets and extensive repair to interior plaster coves, cornices and other detailing were also completed. New gym equipment, bleachers, backboards and score boards completed the interior project scope.

This project was complicated by the COVID shutdown just as the construction was starting, requiring numerous starts and stops along the way allowing students and teachers in the building only when construction workers were limited to exterior only work. Portions of the first floor and basement and other locations of defective concrete were patched and reconstructed as required to cover exposed reinforcing and other structurally fragile conditions as required to ensure the underlying structure was sound.
